Deep within the Kuiper belt, at an average distance of roughly 45 astronomical units from the Sun, lies the dwarf planet 136472 Makemake. Discovered in March 2005 by a team led by astronomer Michael Brown at the Palomar Observatory, Makemake is the third-largest known trans-Neptunian object (TNO) and one of the four officially recognized dwarf planets in the outer Solar System alongside Pluto, Eris, and Haumea. Spanning approximately 1,430 kilometers in diameter, Makemake represents a pristine laboratory for studying volatile ice sublimation, organic chemistry photolysis, and planetary evolution in the coldest regimes of the Solar System.
