The Unmarred Carbonaceous Crust and Spherical Form of Dwarf Planet Hygiea
Deep within the outer margins of the main asteroid belt, orbiting between Mars and Jupiter, lies a dark, carbon-rich world that has fundamentally challenged planetary taxonomy . Discovered in 1849 by Italian astronomer Annibale de Gasparis , 10 Hygiea was long cataloged simply as the fourth-largest asteroid in the solar system. However, a revolutionary suite of observations published in 2019 using the SPHERE instrument on the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) transformed our understanding of this distant body. The images revealed that Hygiea is nearly perfectly spherical, satisfying the critical criteria for classification as a dwarf planet .
