The Radiant Cosmic Web and Starburst Cavities of the Tarantula Nebula
In the southern constellation of Dorado, situated within our neighboring satellite galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud, lies a stellar nursery of gargantuan proportions. Cataloged as 30 Doradus or NGC 2070, the Tarantula Nebula is the most massive and luminous star-forming region in the entire Local Group of galaxies. Spanning more than a thousand light-years across, its sheer scale defies comprehension; if it were as close to Earth as the famous Orion Nebula, it would cast visible shadows on our planet at night and cover an area of the sky equivalent to sixty full moons. The nebula owes its popular moniker to the intricate, spindly filaments of glowing gas and dark dust that stretch across its expanse, resembling the hairy legs of a colossal cosmic arachnid.
