The Cryovolcanic Plumes and Fractured Ice Shell of Saturnian Moon Enceladus
Gliding through the outer reaches of Saturn’s extensive satellite system, Enceladus stands out as one of the most physically dynamic moons in the Solar System. Discovered by astronomer William Herschel in 1789, this relatively compact satellite—measuring approximately 504 kilometers in mean diameter—possesses an extraordinary surface characteristic: a geometric albedo approaching 0.99. Because its crust is composed almost entirely of pure, uncontaminated water ice, Enceladus reflects virtually all incident solar radiation, rendering it one of the coldest and most brilliant solid bodies known to planetary science, with equilibrium surface temperatures hovering around 75 Kelvin.
