The Enormous Ice Canyons and Crater Basins of Saturnian Moon Tethys
Among the mid-sized icy satellites orbiting Saturn, Tethys stands as one of the most starkly luminous and geologically fractured worlds in the Solar System. Discovered in 1684 by astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini , this 1,062-kilometer-diameter moon is composed almost entirely of pure water ice, with a bulk density of approximately 0.98 grams per cubic centimeter—barely below that of liquid water. This extremely low density indicates that Tethys is virtually devoid of a heavy silicate core, functioning instead as a world-scale ball of frozen water modified by ancient impacts and severe tectonic stresses. The physical surface of Tethys exhibits an extraordinarily high visual albedo, reflecting more than 80 percent of incoming sunlight.
